Since 2004, John has focused his law practice on complex commercial real estate transactions, business deals and corporate matters for clients ranging from Fortune 200 corporations to regional developers to families and individuals. He has represented buyers and sellers of raw land and developed properties, including office buildings, retail centers, quick-serve restaurant (QSR) projects, multi-family residential apartment projects and mixed-use developments. He has assisted developers with new office, retail, QSR, multi-family and mixed-use projects, including their ownership structure and the financing transactions funding them. In related work, John has helped clients with a wide variety of leases and other agreements related to the ownership, maintenance and operation of various types of real estate, investments and businesses. He has also handled many types of disputes for land owners, developers, business owners, investors and contractors, both prior to and throughout the litigation process. In the last five years (through October, 2016), both at his own firm and now with Sparkman + Foote LLP, John has been lead counsel for buyers, sellers and developers in closing in excess of one billion dollars of real estate purchase, sale and financing (acquisition loans; construction loans; re-financings) transactions.John splits his time between the firm’s Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver offices. He spent the majority his childhood in Fort Worth and Arlington, Texas, and started visiting Colorado in the mid-1980s. John has enjoyed increasing amounts of time in the state ever since for recreation, family events and his work as an attorney. John is licensed to practice law in both Texas and Colorado. This means he can represent Texas-based and Colorado-based clients on transactions and other legal matters anywhere in the world. He can also assist clients located outside of Texas and Colorado, or even outside of the United States, with transactions and other legal matters in Texas and/or Colorado.
John graduated high school from Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth, Texas, and went on to earn a BA from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1993. Next, he earned a JD from Texas Tech University School of Law and was first licensed as an attorney in November, 1996, by the Supreme Court of Texas. John initially focused his practice in litigation at law firms in Fort Worth and Austin, Texas, but he became increasingly involved in real estate and business-related transactions. In 2001, he returned to school at SMU’s Cox School of Business in order to pursue these interests. John graduated with an MBA in 2003. After finishing business school, he transitioned his law practice to focus on real estate transactions, business deals and related matters, including disputes. He finds his litigation background is an asset in his current practice.
John enjoys spending free time with his family, pursuing outdoor activities ranging from skiing to gardening, and rooting for the Vanderbilt Commodores to win any athletic competition. Married to a third generation CU-Boulder graduate, he also happily roots for the Buffaloes.
